Lauretta (Laurie) Cathers, Ph.D. serves as director of the Bachelor of Science in Health Services Program for the College of Health Professions. In this capacity, she works in collaboration with departments within and outside the college to enhance undergraduate student learning. She has been at Virginia Commonwealth University for over 20 years and has focused mostly on community-based research in HIV and Addiction. She received her PhD in Health Related Sciences, concentration in Rehabilitation Leadership in 2013 and MSW in 2000, both from VCU. She received her Bachelor's in Communications for Webster University in St. Louis, MO in 1993. She engages in a variety of research, teaching and service projects. She co-developed the Behavioral Science Curriculum; an interdisciplinary collaboration between Rehabilitation Counseling and VCU School of Dentistry. The curriculum focuses on behavior theory, interpersonal communication and patient-centered care. In addition, provides guest lectures on qualitative inquiry, addiction, interpersonal communication at both undergraduate and graduate level courses. Her research methodology experience ranges from randomized clinical trials to qualitative inquiry. Dr. Cathers resides in Richmond, Virginia.
