Mentorship
The B.S. in Health Services program is seeking volunteers to serve as mentors for undergraduate students as they prepare for careers and graduate education. We welcome current professionals from a variety of industries, as well as individuals who have experience navigating the transition to graduate school. You do not need to be a Virginia Commonwealth University or College of Health Professions alumnus to participate.
The goal of this mentorship experience is to help students develop professional skills, expand their networks, and gain valuable insight into career pathways and graduate education. By sharing your experiences, you can help students make informed decisions about their future while building confidence as they transition from college to the next stage of their professional journey.
Mentors and students may discuss topics such as:
- Professional networking
- Graduate school preparation
- Leadership development
- Professional communication
- Resume and application review
- Interview preparation
- Early career guidance
- Workplace professionalism
- Work-life balance
We are especially interested in mentors with experience in areas such as:
- Hospitals and health systems
- Outpatient care
- Rehabilitation services
- Long-term care
- Public health
- Community health
- Government
- Nonprofit organizations
- Higher education
- Private industry
Mentors are asked to connect with their assigned student(s) a minimum of three times during the semester through in-person, Zoom, or phone conversations. We recognize that mentors have varying schedules, and our goal is to create a meaningful yet manageable experience that is rewarding for both mentors and students.
